It's a texture which is DeviantArt's idea of an "additional map".semory wrote:what's a dirt null?
It's basically an 32x32 white texture with black spots (I think), which produces this horrible shine effect that just makes me wanna hurl.

It is a texture that the 3ds Max script creates and applies as missing maps (such as light and spec maps)^^
So yeah...if you don't change the mesh after...it really IS he laziest method ever xD but what do you expect?

But I just can't get why is everyone alright with that!
Model that has Dirt_null applied makes me want to vomit. I mean, it's disgusting how shiny those models are.
They look like they are covered in some kind of horrendous goo that looks like grease and *vomits*

lol i remember back when normal mapping became common say early 2000's or so... remember thinking models are sooooo shiny and look so horrible, but now it's in EVERY game . but oh, i think i see now... it's something that mariokart or xnaaral came up with for models with missing lightmaps ? i forget who wrote the max script...

Mariokart^^ I dunno why actually... dirt_null can even bug your whole model as soon as it is a lightmap and you use a render group wich supports an alpha channel xD

First of all, happy new years guys! This is my first post in 2013
Second, yeah... I totally know what you're all saying. On TRF, almost all the porters stopped posting models there and maybe Goha's the only skilled one still there. Lezisell started to "spam" over the forum and DA right after rexil announced he wanted to quit. He even admitted "I'm trying to be the new rexil". Well, I don't think this person (like many others) is on the right path. If you want to be a good porter, you have to understand that speed is not more important than quality and if someone already said he/she wants to work on a model, other people should at least try to be respectful.
This is what I noticed so far, what users like him don't really care about:
1) Lightmaps
2) Bones renaming
3) Textures editing/adding
When I started to port some models on my own, I didn't know a thing about lightmaps in blender. I then started to make some research because the already converted models looked so damn good with them applied and I absolutely wanted to learn as well.
Well, people like lezisell don't give a damn.
Renaming bones is BORING, I have to admit that. However I think it has to be done, for yourself first... because original bones are pretty difficult to pose. Renamed bones could also help other users to make easier poses, but here again... they don't care.
Super shiny specular maps... yeah. They need to be edited all the time and normal maps are even missing in certain cases.
Just like Roxas, I definitely hate maps like "dirt_null", "norm_null", etc.

Re: Port now, update later
rexil was very fast though; he was typically on xentax as soon as any script was released (if the game had hot models that is ). he was really quick with the few models i had sent him. good times lol.
Re: Port now, update later
That is true, I was quite surprised to see how fast he was XD but at least his models always had a good quality. Lightmaps, correct normals and specs and bones renamed.
