Ninja Gaiden Series Models

I got a question about Ninja Gaiden 2 models, when crofty ported Sonia, was a custom rig used, or did crofty find some way of exporting the bones properly? I'd like to know coz I've dumped most of the character models so far, and wanted to know that before I try and rig them myself.
